Agia Mavra Church
Agia Mavra church is located in the village of Maherado.
It was built during the 14th century and is considered to be one of the most important and famous churches in Zakynthos Island. It consists of an imposing Venetian belfry built in a way that amasingly, every bell ring can be heard throughout Zakynthos.
The church houses a remarkable collection of fine icons and frescoes painted by famous Greek artists.
Among those art pieces one can admire the icon of Agia Mavra which is said to be miraculous.Innumerable offerings surround the icon amongst them the famous and valuable jewel of Queen Olga.
The feast of Agia Mavra is celebrated on the 3rd of May when the villagers and other Zakynthians gather in the church to pray all night long.
